The CLA was co-financed by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Scientific & Technological Research (MURST) and the European Union as part of the Multi-regional project 1994/99 “Research, Technological Development and Higher Formation”. The University's Academic Senate deliberated the CLA in February 2000. The
memorandum of association sets out the CLA's main objectives, which include guaranteeing linguistic formation for all within the University, experimenting new foreign language teaching and learning methodologies with the aid of new innovative technologies, promoting and organising language courses, promoting foreign exchanges as well as collaborating with other scholars, Institutions and schools both within as well outside of the Basilicata region. The
staff of the CLA is made up of the President, the Technical Director, 11 permanent, full-time ex- Foreign Language Lecturers and Foreign Language Assistants as well as native-speaker French, English, German and Spanish contract teachers, the permanent full-time technical-administrative staff as well as specialised contract technicians. The work carried out by the CLA is planned and managed by its
Technical-Scientific Committee (CTS).
