Brief definition

The degradation of the natural resources is one of the causes of depopulation of rural areas and abandonment of traditional management practices.

Objective

Identification and mapping of ESAs, predicting the areas in which the degradation process will be more important. Prioritisation of mitigation actions to combat desertification.

Importance with respect to desertification

Depopulation of rural areas is a socio-economic factor involved in land degradation processes, causing increase in risk of erosion, fires and pests.

Secondary objectives of the indicator

For the Spanish NAP it is very important to approach the desertification process from a socio-economic point of view.

Depopulation is included as a conceptual indicator because is a generalised perception by people that rural depopulation is desertification. However no effective informative measure has been found.
